Mapp Gallery Guidelines

Map Gallery Submission is now closed, thanks for your interest!

This page provides more information for Mapp Gallery submissions. Guidelines for school maps submission can be viewed here.

Cost 

Participation in the Mapp Gallery competition is free!  You do not need to be registered for the conference to participate in the Map Gallery.

Award Categories

  1. Student: Map completed as a part of a program or course at a post-secondary educational institution. Poster submission.

  2. Private Sector (Industry): Map completed as an employee of a privately owned company. Poster submission.

  3. Public Sector (Government): Map completed as an employee of the government. Includes non-profit organizations. Poster submission.

  4. Web Map: Interactive map you developed and available on the internet.

  5. App: Application software designed for mobile devices that uses location (geography, maps, GPS). App must be available for download. Winner decided by participant voting at conference.

All entries are eligible for the following awards:

  1. Honourable Mention: The top ranked Mapp Gallery entry that did not receive an award in another category. 

  2. People's Choice: Top Mapp Gallery entry as chosen by conference attendees

     

Fantastic Prizes

The Mapp Gallery has fanatastic prizes. Past Map Gallery prizes have included cameras, eReaders, camcorders, iPods, GPS units etc as well a plaque for your office. Keep reading here for updates on prizes being offered at the GeoAlberta 2012 Map Gallery competition.

Sponsors

Sponsors make the Mapp Gallery competition possible and will be recognized at the Mapp Gallery poster area, on the GeoAlberta website and in the awards presentation.  If you wish to sponsor a prize please send an email to mapgallery@geoalberta.com.       

Judging Criteria

Maps and Posters will judged as follows;  A maximum of 60 percent is awarded to the Map (Cartographic Elements and Standards, Map Information, Text and Labeling, Symbology, Graphic Elements and Map Data).  40 percent is awarded to general impression (Overall Impression, Overall Map Communication, Overall Map Organization and Originality)

Web Maps will be judged as follows; A maximum of 60 percent is awarded to the Web Map Details (Structure, Functionality, Interactivity, Text and Labeling, Map Data, and Symbology and Map Elements).  40 percent is awarded to the general experience (Overall Experience, Overall Web Map Content, Overall Web Map Design and Originality).

Submission Details

  1. You may enter as many maps as you wish. Please complete an online submission form for each map entered.

  2. The maximum poster size is 4 ft wide by 4 ft high. Larger posters may be excluded from the competition.

  3. A digital copy will be sent to the judges for judging prior to the conference.

  4. Late entries will not be accepted. Please read the instructions carefully.

For Map Gallery poster submission:

  1. Please name your digital copy with YourName_Map#_GeoAB2012.pdf. PDF is the preferred digital file format. Uploading instructions will be provided to you once you complete the online submission form.

  2. Drop off your hardcopy map(s) at the GeoAlberta 2011 Conference Registration booth or mail your hardcopy to: Bart Hulshof, 2500 University Drive NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 1N4 to be received not later than Wednesday May 2nd, 2012

For Best Web Map Category:

Your web site must be operational from the date of online submission to the end of GeoAlberta 2012 conference.
