School Map guidelines
This page provides more information about the School Map competition. The competition is open to Alberta students in Grades 4 to 12. For information on the Mapp Gallery please visit the Map Gallery Guidelines page.
Format and Size
Students should submit a digital version of a map that they have created. When printed this map should be no larger than 22" in any dimension (length or width). The digital submission should be in PDF format, of a suitable quality for printing (e.g at least 100 DPI). Students are not required to submit hard copies of Schools Maps: we will select the 10 finalists from digital maps and then print these for judging and display at the GeoAlberta Conference.
Content
The map can be of anything that the students have mapped. This could even include fictional places. In assessing the maps, marks will be awarded for interest, originality, quality and content.
Method of Production
We do not place any restrictions on how the map is produced. We are looking for original maps that are interesting and well made, these can be made using software such as ESRI, AutoCAD, Mapinfo, PowerPoint, Adobe, Photoshop, Google Sketch up etc or even drawn by hand.
Authorship
Maps entered into the competition must be the work of students. This could be individuals or groups up to whole classes. Data used can be from other sources (and should be acknowledged as such), but the creation of the map must be ENTIRELY the work of the student(s) named as the authors of the maps. The teacher must digitally 'sign' a statement to this effect during the online submission process.
Entries Limit
There is a limit of one entry per class. There could be more than one map per school per grade if there are multiple classes in a year taking a subject that involves mapping. This creates an opportunity to discuss 'What is a Map?' and 'What Makes a Good Map?' before selecting the map that the class wishes to submit into the competition.
