Session Abstract

Designing a Data Mart: A Step towards Business Intelligence

The Information Technology group at The City of Calgary has been involved in Data Warehousing for over 5 years. In this workshop, we will review our experiences with the tools, technology, and processes used to plan, design, and implement our Data Marts.

Using checklists, exercises, and demonstrations, at the end of this workshop you will:

  • be able to identify benefits of Data Warehousing, and its role in Business Intelligence
  • understand key Data Warehousing terminology
  • see the power of today's Data Warehousing tools
  • gain knowledge of the end-to-end processes for building a Data Mart
  • know the steps to assess the readiness of a business area to capitalize on Data Warehousing
  • understand the role Data Profiling performs in the success of a Data Warehouse
  • design a preliminary Dimensional Model for a business area Data Mart based on requirements
  • help plan your Data Mart with GIS considerations

Speaker Biography

Stephen Gale

Stephen Gale, CCP, I.S.P. is a graduate of the University of Calgary and began his Information Technology career in the Oil & Gas Sector with TransCanada PipeLines, PetroCanada, then a small Management Consulting firm. He then worked in the Health Sector with Calgary District Hospital Group. Ten years ago, Stephen joined the City of Calgary. Currently, he is Supervisor of Data Warehousing working in the Corporate Information and Integration Centre, and is really enjoying the opportunity to use The City's wealth of data in delivering enterprise business solutions.
